The question of religion against science has been asked many times, since the beginning of modern science. Many people believe that religion is true and great, that there is a higher power, and that “God” is incontestable. There are also a great many people who believe that hard-facts and repeatable experiments are the only way to obtain true knowledge. According to them, since Religion is improvable, it is wrong. Religion and Science are different ways of interpreting the world around us; it is very difficult to say one is superior.
The preaching of Religion can be somewhat one sided. We can’t begin to understand our world if we only have one side of the story. To put absolute faith in a potentially non-existent God, is contributing to this ignorance. When Raphaella conjured up the four elements, even though it was a complete hoax, the men/spirits believed so strongly, that they fled in terror.2786379 They thought harm would come to them, although it was only a magician’s trick. Religion attempts to explain the world around us. Most major religions have been around for quite awhile, long before science could explain anything. Theories were written down and then taken for the truth. Now that science can prove against these theories, it is popular to believe that God never existed; that it was just a “magician’s trick.”
Science may be able to disprove some of the theorys contained in ancient texts, but we aren’t even close to being able to explain everything. 18h09 To use the example of evolution, it is still just a theory. On the other side, to this date nobody has been able to present hard-facts that Adam and Eve really existed. In the story, when Garnet is arguing the con side of, “Love at first sight.” He believed strongly in this opinion until he was proven wrong by falling in love with his opponent, Raphaella. Science has also proven certain parallels to religious beliefs. In the book, Garnet dreams about Hannah being stoned to death. Later when they exhume Hannah to put her in her new grave, they discover that she really was stoned; every bone in her body was broken.
I believe that it is just impossible to say either is better than the other. Science offers some explanations, while religion offers others. Science and religion are different means of trying to explain the universe; they both serve the same purpose. When viewed in this light it seems frivolous to argue which is greater. In the book we read, Garnet believes in science and spirituality. He has had better experiences and made more of himself because of those combined beliefs. 27
In conclusion, there is absolutely no way to say Science is better than Religion or vice-versa. Religion is difficult to prove, and even more difficult to disprove. Science presents the facts but doesn’t have all the answers. It is better, in this day and age, to know all sides of the story before acting strongly on your opinion or trying to force your opinion on someone else. Making an informed decision is the best way to go. SOMETIMES THE BOLDEST STATEMENTS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT.
